Wear athletic clothing and avoid caffeine or heavy meals before your test. You'll wear a mask that measures your oxygen use and carbon dioxide output as exercise intensity gradually increases on a treadmill or stationary bike until you reach your maximum effort.
Healthy individuals who would like a measurable, science-backed way to determine cardiovascular fitness levels
Individuals who are pregnant or with recent cardiac event, uncontrolled heart disease, respiratory disease, orthopedic limitations or recent illness
VO2 Max (short for maximum volume of oxygen) testing measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. It reflects the efficiency of your heart, lungs, blood vessels, and muscles, and is a key indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness. A higher score generally means better endurance, a stronger cardiovascular system, and a lower risk of chronic disease. The test is increasingly recognized by researchers as a strong predictor of longevity.
Humanaut Health's VO2 test is performed through a short exercise, on a treadmill or stationary bike, while wearing a VO2 Master mask. During this test, exercise intensity will increase to measure oxygen performance. The active portion of the VO2 test is about 10–15 minutes, but with prep and cooldown, plan for 30 minutes total. The VO2 Master exercise data will be analyzed to provide a VO2 Max score. VO2 Master's reported margin of error is within 2%.
The test is strenuous but safe. You’ll breathe through a mask and work to your personal limit—not beyond it. It's supervised by trained staff.
VO2 Max Testing is recommended every 3–6 months, if you’re training, or annually as part of a longevity program.
VO2 testing is $100 for a 30-minute session. Frequent VO2 testing is included in Humanaut Health membership. Learn more about our medical care membership programs here.
